On 14 March 2023 OpenAI published GPT-4, a large model that could take text and images and write text back. It said GPT-4 scored around the top 10% of test takers on a simulated bar exam; GPT-3.5 scored around the bottom 10%. ChatGPT Plus users could try the text model that day.
That is a real improvement people could feel in harder questions. It is also still a machine that can be wrong with confidence. OpenAI said so on the same page.
