On 22 October 2026, Anthropic announced it is donating Agent Skills to the Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation, a body it co-founded with Block and OpenAI. According to the company, Agent Skills is an open standard, meaning a shared set of rules, that provides AI agents (software tools that carry out tasks) with specific workflows and knowledge. The contribution includes the project's name, logo, GitHub organisation and the agentskills.io web domain.
Since Anthropic published the standard in December 2025, more than 70 platforms, including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and VS Code, have added support for it. The company reported that 1 million skills have been published and nearly 280 million installed so far. Individual engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and other firms will now maintain the project, starting with a proposed plan for versioned releases, a formal proposal process and security guidance.
